Sore Throat-Inflammation of Pharynx
Sore throat refers to the inflammation of the pharynx, or back of the throat. It occurs frequently when a person has a cold or an attack of influenza. Although people who have the flu (influenza), cold sores (oral herpes simplex) or infectious mononucleosis (“mono”) also commonly have a sore throat.
An irritating condition of the throat may range from the harmless to the potentially serious.
Generally throat infections are caused by a virus & can spread through the air by hanging on to droplets from coughs and sneezes & sticks to unwashed hands that have been exposed to fluids from a sick person’s nose or mouth.
Symptoms of Sore Throat: The main symptom of sore throat and pain with swallowing. Other symptoms vary depending on whether the infection is viral or bacterial (usually strep throat).
Sore throat often is accompanied by other symptoms, such as:
Dry cough & Hoarseness.
Children may have diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
Some viruses cause painful sores in and around the mouth, including the lips.
Burning and dryness in the throat followed by chills, fever and some hoarseness or laryngitis.
The lymph glands along the sides of the neck may become swollen and tender.
The back of the throat may become very red and even covered with a greyish-white membrane.
Difficulty in swallowing, especially during the acute stage.
Postnasal discharge if the irritation has spread to the nasal passages.
The patient with sore throat, caused by ‘ Streptococcus’ germs suffers from high fever and sharp pain with swelling.
Fever & Headache, if you have high fever & sharp pain with swelling then sore throat is caused by streptococcus germs.
Body ache and a general sick feeling generally sick feeling.
As a general rule, if you have a prominent cough and nasal symptoms you are more likely to have viral pharyngitis than strep throat.
In addition to viral and bacterial pharyngitis, an infection with fungi sometimes can cause throat pain, difficulty swallowing and white patches inside the mouth.
This throat infection, commonly called thrush, usually affects infants and people with weakened immune systems.
Treatment of Sore Throat with Home Remedies: If you feel above symptoms of sore throat then first thing you should fast on orange juice & water for three to five days, depending on the severity of the condition.
Apply wet pack to throat at two-hourly intervals during the day, and one at night. The procedure for wet pack is to wring out some linen material in cold water, wrap two or three times round the affected part, and cover with some flanner.
Gargle several times with warm water mixed with a little salt. A hot Epsom-salt bath taken daily during this period, will be highly beneficial.
When the more severe symptoms subside, then you may adopt an all-fruit diet taking three meals a day of juicy fruits such as orange, apple, pineapple and papaya at five-hourly intervals for three or four days,. Thereafter you may gradually adopt a well-balanced diet, with emphasis on seeds, nuts and grains, raw vegetables and fresh fruits.
You can treat sore throat with beneficial home remedies as follows:
One such remedy is use of mango (aam) bark which is very efficacious in sore throat disorders. Mango bark fluid application have highly beneficial results. You can use this fluid for throat gargle by mixing 10 ml. of the fluid extract with 125 ml. of water.
The herb belleric myrobalan (bahera) is another valuable remedy for sore throat. Mix pulp this fruit with salt, long pepper (pipli), honey & take the mixture as per your requirement. Dried belleric myrobalan fruit roasted after covering it with a wheat flour, is also a popular remedy for sore throat.
Betel leaves (pan-ka-patta) have proved for the beneficial treatment of sore throat. The fruit of betel tree mixed with honey is very much effective to relieve irritating throat cough. You can also apply betel leaves for obtaining immediate relief.
Bishop’s weed (ajowan) is also valuable in treating sore throat. An infusion prepared by adding Bishop’s weed and salt in boiling water can be used for gargling to cure acute pharyngitis, sore throat, and hoarseness. Moreover, you can also gargle with this solution 2-3 times in a day to heal toothache caused by tooth decay.
Taking coarsely powdered spice cinnamon (dalchini) & boiled in a glass of water with a pinch of pepper powder and honey is also an effective remedy for sore throat.The oil of cinnamon, mixed with honey, also gives immense relief.
A gargle prepared from fenugreek (methi) seeds has also been found very effective remedy for treating sore throat. To prepare this gargle, take two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in a litre of cold water and allowed to simmer for half an hour over a low flame.
The leaves of the holy basil (tulsi) have also been found beneficial in the treatment of sore throat. You must drink water boiled with basil leaves on regular basis to obtain relief from sore throat.
In continuation you must avoid rapid changes in temperature like hot sun-shine to air conditioned rooms. Avoid cold and sore foods which may irritate throat.
Make sure & avoid touching tissues, handkerchief, towels or utensils used by the persons suffering from sore throat.
Causes of Sore Throat: The main cause of sore throat viral or bacterial infection. Many different kind of ailments can give rise to this condition. The most common of these ailments are common cold and influenza. Other diseases which can cause sore throat are :
Even leukemia on rare occasions may lead to sore throat.
Other causes of this disease are excessive smoking and talking, frequent use of voice as in certain professions like singing, acting and teaching.
